Wax polishes comprise an ester wax which is a reaction product of a substantially monobasic aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms or an alkali metal salt, acid halide or anhydride thereof with a compound of the general formula <FORM:0917422/III/1> in which X is a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a hydroxyl group or a hydroxyl group etherified with an alkylene oxide containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R is an alkyl radical of up to 4 carbon atoms or a group CH2X, m and n are whole numbers the sum of which is 6 and in which at least two of the symbols X are other than hydrogen atoms or with a mixture of a compound of the said formula and not more than 90% (calculated on the weight of the mixture) of an aliphatic polyol (see Group IV(b)). The wax may be emulsified with ionic and non-ionic emulsifiers.ALSO:The invention comprises an ester wax which is a reaction product of a substantially monobasic aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms or an alkali metal salt, acid halide or anhydride thereof with a compound of the general formula <FORM:0917422/IV (b)/1> in which X stands for a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a hydroxyl group or a hydroxyl group esterified with an alkylene oxide containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R stands for an alkyl radical of up to 4 carbon atoms or a group CH2X, m and n are whole numbers the sum of which is 6 and in which at least two of the symbols X are other than hydrogen atoms, or with a mixture of a compound of the said formula and not more than 90% (calculated on the weight of the mixture) of an aliphatic polyol. Some unesterified carboxylic acid may be present in the wax, optionally partly in the form of a Group I or Group II metal salt. Carboxylic acids specified include behenic, arachidic, lauric, oleic and stearic acids in addition to wax acids obtained by bleaching crude montan wax e.g. with chromic acid or by oxidising with chromic acid the products obtained by the oxidation of paraffin. Examples are furnished. The products are employed in the preparation of polishes (see Group III). |
