Uplink control in a wireless communication network

A method and system are provided having an uplink control structure for providing channel estimation and data demodulation in a wireless communication network. The uplink control structures enable mobile terminals to communicate with corresponding base stations to perform various functions including obtaining initial system access, submitting a bandwidth request, triggering a continuation of negotiated service, or providing a proposed allocation re-configuration header. A dedicated random access channel is provided to communicatively couple the base station and the mobile terminal so that the mobile terminal can select a random access signaling identification. A resource request is received at the base station to uplink resource information from the mobile terminal and an initial access information request is received from the mobile terminal to configure the base station connection.

1. A method for providing uplink control in a wireless communication network, the method comprising:
by a base station:
transmitting a communication to a mobile terminal over an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) wireless network, wherein the communication invokes selection of a reserved random access signaling identification by the mobile terminal;receiving from the mobile terminal a selected reserved random access signaling identification in response to said transmitting;receiving from the mobile terminal a resource request determined at least in part based on the selected reserved random access signaling identification;receiving from the mobile terminal an initial access information request to configure a base station connection;receiving from the mobile terminal a resource request for sending uplink resource information; andreceiving from the mobile terminal a service renewal request for a configured service using the reserved random signaling identification when the mobile terminal moves to a different cell.
