The present invention provides a crosslinked amine and amide polymers effective for binding and removing bile salts from the gastrointestinal tract. These bile acid binding polymers or pharmaceutical compositions thereof can be administered to subjects to treat various conditions, including hypercholesteremia, diabetes, pruritis, irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea (IBS-D), bile acid malabsorption, and the like. |

A crosslinked amine polymer comprising a reaction product of a polymerization mixture comprising monomers, the polymer having the general structure of formula 1: wherein R41 is C5 to C12 alkylene or C5 to C12 alkylene wherein one or more of the —CH2— groups of the alkylene group is replaced with an amide, a carbonyl, an ether, an ester, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, or a heterocyclo functional group; R42 is C3 to C12 alkylene or C3 to C12 alkylene wherein one or more of the —CH2— groups of the alkylene group is replaced with an amide, a carbonyl, an ether, an ester, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, or a heterocyclo functional group; R43 is C3 to C12 alkyl, aralkyl or C3 to C12 alkyl wherein one or more of the —CH2— groups of the alkyl group is replaced with an amide, a carbonyl, an ether, an ester, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, or a heterocyclo functional group; b is 1.5 to 25 mole percent based on the ratio of monomers added to the polymerization mixture; and each of a, c and d is independently 0 to 97 mole percent based on the ratio of monomers added to the polymerization mixture |
