Disclosed are a device and a method to count a number of steps in a smartphone environment. The present invention provides a device and a method to count the number of steps in a smartphone environment in real time. According to an embodiment, the device to count the number of steps in a smartphone environment comprises: a data obtaining unit of obtaining an acceleration value in accordance with a motion of a terminal holder by an acceleration sensor of a terminal; a walking determining unit of determining a motion type of the terminal holder based on the acceleration value obtained by the data obtaining unit; a walking acceleration data analysis unit of analyzing an acceleration value obtained by the data obtaining unit when the motion type of the terminal holder, determined by the walking determining unit, corresponds to walking and calculating an average of a highest value of acceleration value and an average of a value in which the highest value of the acceleration value and the lowest value of the acceleration value are added; a critical value range setting unit of calculating a critical value range from the average of the highest value of the acceleration value calculated by the walking acceleration data analysis unit and the average of the value in which the highest value of the acceleration value and the lowest value of the acceleration value are added; and a step detection unit of detecting the number of steps from the acceleration value obtained by the data obtaining unit based on the critical value range calculated by the critical value range setting unit.
