A method of encoding information comprises sensing parameters of the surroundings; selecting and storing a set of reference parameters that determine a pose of the encoder; selecting a set of key features for use as inputs to an encoding process; and applying the encoding process to raw information, together with measurements of the surroundings, to generate encoded information. A decoder provided with the reference parameters and optional decoding parameters must be located in substantially the same surroundings in order to decode the information. The key features selected for use are features of the appearance or geometry of those surroundings, e.g. of buildings (12, Fig. 2). The decoder may compute and output a decoded result based upon measurements of the key features. Alternatively, the decoder may be combine features with visual overlays produced by the decoder to reveal a decoded result in visible form (6, Fig. 1). The invention generally relates to the field of visual cryptography, and could find application in treasure hunt games. |
