Provided is an automatic transmission for a vehicle, the automatic transmission including: a sub speed-changing mechanism (30) in a transmission (4) that transmits the rotational driving force of an engine (1) to a drive wheel (7) at a speed ratio that is determined according to the combination of engaged and disengaged states of a plurality of friction engagement elements; a mechanical oil pump (10m) that is driven by the engine (1); and a controller (12) that causes the engine (1) to stop when coasting stop criteria are met whilst the vehicle speed is decelerating. The controller (12) is configured so that, even when the coasting stop criteria are met, a coasting stop that causes the engine (1) to stop is not executed during a speed change that changes the combination of engaged and disengaged states of the plurality of friction engagement elements in the sub speed-changing mechanism (30), and so that the coasting stop is executed after the speed change in the sub speed-changing mechanism (30) is complete. |
