PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To distribute SMS (short message service) messages to interworking wireless local network user equipment (I-WLAN UE).SOLUTION: Delivering an SMS message to an interworking wireless local area network user equipment (I-WLAN UE 122) begins by registering the UE 122 with an Internet Protocol short message gateway (IP-SM-GW 118). A capability report of the UE 122 is sent from the UE 122 to GW 118. The SMS message is transmitted from a short message service center (SMSC 104) to the GW 118. The capabilities of the UE 122 are evaluated at the IP-SM-GW 118. The SMS message is delivered to the UE 122 via the GW 118 if the UE 122 has the capabilities to receive the SMS message.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
