931,354. Two-part couplings; plug boards. AMP Inc. Oct. 9, 1959 [March 25, 1959], No. 34300/59. Class 38 (1). A plug comprising a sleeve with a rounded nose is removably held in an aperture in a plugboard by a detent protruding through an opening in the sleeve under spring action to engage a face of the plugboard, the detent having an integral member extending into a hole in the nose. As shown, a plug comprises a hollow cylindrical sleeve 10 formed with a bead 22 to limit insertion of the plug into an aperture 2 in a plugboard 4 and having a rounded nose 8 and at the other end a ferrule 14 for crimping to a conductor 16, an insulating sheath 20 moulded around the ferrule 14 to serve as a handle, and a V-shaped spring 26 arranged within the sleeve so that the apex 28 of the V protrudes through a hole 24 in the nose 8 and detents protrude through diametrically opposed openings 36 and 37 in the sleeve, the detents being formed by the arms 30 and 31 of the V and legs 38 and 39 which extend substantially radially into the sleeve through the openings 36 and 37. The protrusion of the detents is limited by limbs 40, 41 extending from the legs 38, 39 inside the sleeve 10 and formed with double bends so that they cross as shown, the ends of the limbs being fixed in the ferrule 14. On insertion of the plug into the aperture the detents are depressed into the sleeve, the apex 28 moving in the hole 24, and spring out when the plug is fully home. The plug may be withdrawn by pulling on the sleeve 20, but if a force to unseat the plug is applied to the nose the detents are urged more forcefully into engagement with the plugboard. The spring may have limbs which do not cross (Fig. 6, not shown), and may have limbs which are not fixed in the ferrule 14 (Fig. 7, not shown). |
