The invention provides a method of promoting intramolecular cyclization of a polymer comprising at least two halide groups using radical trap-assisted atomic transfer radical coupling (RTA-ATRC), with minimal formation of intermolecular adducts. In certain embodiments, use of a radical trap to form a persistent radical on the polymer allows the RTA-ATRC reactions to occur in a stepwise fashion and be first order with respect to the polymer radical. The methods of the invention may be used to prepare monocyclic and/or polycyclic polymers. The methods of the invention may be used to promote intermolecular couplings of building blocks, such as polymers, as well. |
