936,743. Making cartons. A. E. REED & CO. Ltd. Aug. 16, 1961 [Aug. 16, 1960], No. 28400/60. Class 18. Blanks of the kind having a base panel 6 to which are hinged walls 8 are fed through an aperture 3 and located by pins 37 to rest on four platforms 19 one at each corner of the panel base 6, and a pedal 32 is depressed to lower through rod 29 four grippers 26 to clamp the blank at the corners of the base panel. Continued downward movement of the pedal moves the platforms 19 relative to fixed mountings 22 causing flap members 20, 21a at the corners to turn through 90 degrees to erect the walls 8 of the blank, Fig. 3. Tapered blocks 39 urge the gusset corner pieces of the blank inwardly and thin fingers on the flaps 20 tuck the gussets into a position parallel to the erected walls 8. Each flap member 21a carries a further flap 21b operated by links 61 to fold the outer part of the walls 8 through 180 degrees on to the inside of the erected wall, with the gussets 9 between them. Upon release of the pedal 32 the mechanism returns to its starting position the erected carton being deflected by stoppers 42 to fall out of the outlet 13 on to a conveyer. The corner platforms can be adjusted to erect different sized boxes by beams 14, 16 having holes 15, 17. The apparatus can be used for cartons in which each wall is of single thickness and the corners secured by overlapping tabs stapled or stuck to the walls. |
