A method for optimizing the design of a spectacle ophthalmic lens comprising:
a) providing the residual astigmatism value and orientation data of a spectacle ophthalmic lens design for at least one gaze direction;

c) providing an optimized spectacle ophthalmic lens design by optimization of the design of the spectacle ophthalmic lens wherein the optimization comprises adapting the management of astigmatism and coma of an lens-eye system based on a combination of the astigmatism and coma of the lens-eye system so as to improve the acuity versus distortion for the wearer's eye and where the lens-eye system consists of the spectacle ophthalmic lens design and the wearer's eye.
