The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for recognizing a pedestrian. The apparatus comprises: a far-infrared camera obtaining far-infrared image data in a predetermined area; and a control module detecting pedestrian candidate groups in the far-infrared image data, removing non-pedestrian candidate groups in the pedestrian candidate groups, and performing pedestrian detection in the pedestrian candidate groups wherein the non-pedestrian candidate groups is removed.
