PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MMI device capable of operating optical signals each having different wavelength or polarization with a shorter optical device which is easy-to manufacture.SOLUTION: An MMI device 100 includes: a substrate layer 101; a core layer 102 which is formed over the substrate layer 101 for transmitting optical signals; and a cladding layer 103 which is formed over the core layer for guiding the optical signals. The MMI device 100 includes a patch which has an un-uniform shape formed by plural crossing curves to form un-uniform refractive index distribution in the MMI device 100.
