The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for correcting image distortion of a wide angle camera for a vehicle, which can secure a wider view area while maintaining characteristics of distortion correction of a virtual camera model. According to the present invention, the apparatus comprises: a wide angle camera mounted on a vehicle; a camera characteristic extraction unit for extracting a camera characteristic parameter of the wide angle camera based on a predetermined mathematical model; a tilt angle calculation unit for calculating a tilt angle for each photographing area of a virtual camera corresponding to the wide angle camera by using the camera characteristic parameter; a yaw angle calculation unit for calculating a yaw angle for each photographing area of the virtual camera; a correction model generating unit for generating a correction model by applying the tilt and yaw angles for each photographing area of the virtual camera; an image correction unit for controlling angles of the virtual camera based on the correction model to convert a view of a photographing image in order to secure a view area of the photographing image which is photographed by the wide angle camera, and generating a correction image according to the view conversion thereof; and a display unit for displaying the correction image outputted from the image correction unit.
