The present invention is an FFS liquid crystal display device provided, in order, with a first polarization plate (2), a first protection layer (3a), a first substrate (10), a first photoalignment film (11), a horizontally aligned liquid crystal layer (12) containing liquid crystal molecules, a second photoalignment film (13), a second substrate (14) that includes a signal electrode and a counter electrode facing the signal electrode, a second protection layer (5a), a second polarization plate (6), and a backlight (7); the first and second protection layers satisfying the relationship nx = ny ≧ nz; the in-plane retardation of each of the first and second photoalignment films being at least 1 nm; the relationship R1 ≦ 0.047 R2 2 - 2.1R2 + 44.3 being satisfied, where the retardation in the thickness direction of each of the first and second protection layers is designated by R1, and the in-plane retardation of each of the first and second photoalignment films is designated by R2; the liquid crystal layer having positive dielectric-constant anisotropy; and the transmission axis of the second polarization plate being perpendicular to the initial alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules. |
