The present technique relates to a reception device, a reception method, a transmission device, and a transmission method with which it is possible to reliably operate an application that is executed in conjunction with AV content. Provided is a reception device comprising: a trigger information acquisition unit that acquires trigger information, which includes at least location information, as information for controlling the operation of an application that is executed in conjunction with AV content; a metadata acquisition unit that acquires application control information for controlling the operation of the application; and an application control unit that controls the operation of the application on the basis of the trigger information and the application control information. For example, the present technique is applicable to a television receiver device.
