Apparatus for welding synthetic plastic sheets 14 comprises a pair of jaws 1, 2 of which the surface 3 of the jaw 1 is bare and the surface 4 of the jaw 2 is covered with a sheet 5 of elastomer freely positioned and held on the jaw 2 so as not to be subjected to lateral or longitudinal strain when compressed by the closing of the jaws, and a projection of small thickness with respect to that of the weld to be produced formed on the face 4 and extending along a line which will be the longitudinal axis of the weld, the faces of the jaws 1, 2 to be applied to the sheets 14 being, other than at the position of the projection, strictly flat so as to be applied exactly one against the other. The entire periphery of the sheet 5 has reduced thickness edges 6 located with both horizontal and vertical play in a frame formed by angle irons 7 secured to the jaw 2. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a longitudinal groove 8 is formed in the face 4 and receives a replaceable bar 9 providing the projection. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the jaw 2 is provided with a slot 8a opening into a wider slot 10 closed at the lower end by a liner 11. The projection is formed by an extension 9a of a bar 12 sliding vertically in the slot 10. The amount of projection of the extension 9a above the face 4 may be adjusted by two screws 13 engaging threads in the liner 11. |
