Intermeshing abutment means are provided on the walls of the channels in a tyre tread in order to form tortuous paths from the tops to the bottoms of the channels, which will inhibit stones &c. from penetrating. Figs. 2, 3 show a tread having two sets of abutments, 15, 15 and 18, 19 radially displaced and forming grooves 20 and 13 " out of phase " with each other. Fig. 5, not shown, illustrates abutments similar to 15 extending to the tops of channels. Fig. 6 shows a more complex arrangement with two sets of abutments and a narrow groove 45.
