摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve focus detection accuracy for a low brightness object at any distance measurement position without increasing a distance measurement time, regardless of an aperture value and the kind of a lens of a photographic lens. <P>SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus comprises: an imaging element in which imaging pixels receiving a flux of light passing through an exit pupil of a photographic lens and focus detection pixels receiving fluxes of the light passing through partial areas of the exit pupil of the photographic lens are arranged; a focus detection section that detects a defocus amount of the photographic lens by a phase difference method using output signals of the focus detection pixels; an acquisition section that acquires aperture information of the photographic lens; a threshold setting section that sets a prescribed threshold on the basis of the acquired aperture information and positions of the focus detection pixels; a reading section that reads pixel signals from the imaging element with a predetermined period; an addition section that adds the pixel signals of the focus detection pixels read from the imaging element with the predetermined period; a comparison section that compares the added addition signal with the prescribed threshold; and a control section that ends the adding process when the comparison determines that the level of the addition signal exceeds the prescribed threshold.
