Nano alumina or silica dispersed in polystyrene

Disclosed is a method of making a polystyrene based nanocomposite by combining a monomer with a nanoparticle to form a mixture and subjecting the mixture to polymerization conditions to produce a polymeric composite. In an embodiment the nanoparticle has been treated with an additive prior to combining with the monomer and the additive contains a silane moiety.

1. A nanocomposite comprising:
a polystyrene based polymer and a nanoparticle, wherein the nanoparticle comprises silica, alumina, or combinations thereof, and wherein the nanoparticle is an untreated nanoparticle; and wherein the nanocomposite has an intercalated morphology, an exfoliated morphology, or combinations thereof.
