A rechargeable lithium battery comprising: a positive electrode comprising a positive active material layer, a negative electrode comprising a negative active material, and an electrolyte wherein the positive active material layer comprises a positive active material, a binder, a conductive material, and an activated carbon, wherein the activated carbon includes micropores having a size of about 5 Å to about 20 Å configured to adsorb and trap manganese ions, and wherein the activated carbon is included in an amount of about 0.1 wt % to about 3 wt % based on the total weight of the positive active material layer; and wherein the activated carbon comprises mesopores having a size greater than about 20 Å and less than or equal to about 500 Å; wherein the volume ratio of micropores to mesopores is 90:10 to 80:20.
