In a varnish pouring machine having a continous varnish circuit, in which are interposed a pump, a pouring head, and a varnish collecting vessel, and which produces a poured curtain of varnish which forms a coating on an article moved through the curtain by a conveying device, the pouring head is made rotatable about its horizontal axis, and is adapted to be swung about a vertical axis above the plane of conveyance of the workpieces; the pouring head is provided with an overflow connection and two relatively movable parts connected together at their upper outer boundary surfaces by a gapless hinge strip; the head is positioned below the varnish pump; and the conveying device is removable from the machine. As shown, the machine comprises two pouring heads 21, 22 each of which may be supplied with a different king of varnish from a separate compartment in a reservoir 2. The varnish for the head 21 is drawn up through a pipe 9 by a pump 7, and supplied to the head through a filter 13, column 17, elbow 19 and perforated pipe 23. The column 17 provides a vertical axis, and the pipe 23 a horizontal axis, about which the head 21, which is supported between end-plates 25, 26, may be swivelled, for maintenance purposes. The head is provided with an inspection chamber, a thermometer, and an overflow pipe 43, controlled by a valve 45, and is made in two parts 122, 123, hinged together by a strip 124, the position of the part 122 being adjustable by an eccentric 129. Excess varnish issuing from the nozzle 29 falls on a baffle 35 and is returned to the reservoir 2 by a trough 33. Workpieces 31 are conveyed through the curtain of varnish 30 by belts 56, 57 and a driven roller 82, the belts 56, 57 and their accessories being carried by tables 92, 93, which are movable on rollers running on rails 96, 97. In order that workpieces 31 may be positioned so that their edges 112, 113 receive a coating, a setting gauge comprising a pivoted and lockable guide 114 may be provided. Parts of furniture, materials in web form, and metal plates may be coated by the apparatus.
