The system has a particulate filter (17) placed in an exhaust pipe (14) to trap particulate matter evacuated from an internal combustion engine (10). An exhaust butterfly valve (18) placed downstream of the filter regulates superficial section of the pipe. A differential pressure sensor (34) detects differential pressure between parts of the pipe in upstream and downstream of the filter. The valve is activated based on the pressure for combustion of the matter to regenerate the filter. An electronic control device determines if the valve functions badly based on the variation of pressure. An independent claim is also included for a method for purifying an exhaust gas.
