Aluminosilicates having an Al2O3 content of less than 10% by weight are impregnated with H3SO4. The aluminosilicates may be prepared by acid (HCl or H2SO4) or other treatment of minerals such as kaolin, bentonite, beidellite, nontronite, hectorite, steatite, sauconite, and montmorillonite. An example is given.ALSO:Catalysts which find use in the conversion of olefines to alcohols are made by impregnating an aluminosilicate having an Al2O3 content of less than 10% with H3PO4. The alumino-silicates with the necessary low Al2O3 content are made in general by treatment of minerals such as beidellite, nontronite, hectorite, steatite, sanconite and montmorillonite. Other minerals mentioned are Kaolin and bentonite. An example is given.
