<p>A particle detection apparatus comprising at least two triboelectric elements 102, 104, 106, 108 is disclosed. The triboelectric elements 102, 104, 106, 108 are exposed to the atmosphere to be impinged by any particles present therein. It also comprises means 112, 114, 116, 118 responsive to the individual electrostatic charge state of the triboelectric elements, such as an electric field mill, a conductive strip, or a Hall probe, which is used to indicate the presence of particles in the atmosphere. The triboelectric elements have differing triboelectric properties, preferably to allow one to distinguish between different types of particle. The elements may be in proximity to each other, perhaps disposed about a common point. One element may be disposed around the periphery of another, or they could be adjacent to each other. The apparatus may be suitable for use as part of an aircraft, preferably as part of the window 110, or the exterior surface. It can be used to detect airborne particulates such as dust, ash, ice, snow, rain or pollution.</p> |
