A method for increasing the abrasion-resistance of a glass surface comprises treating the surface with a titanium-, zirconium-, tin- or vanadiumcontaining compound which is pyrolysable to form oxides of the metal thereon while the surface is at a temperature at least as high as the pyrolysing temperature p of the compound, cooling the surface to below 450 DEG F, and spraying on to the still heated glass surface an olefin polymer or a polyurethane or a polystyrene or an acetic acid salt of an alkyl amine in an amount sufficient to form a thin tightly - adhering transparent substantially colourless coating on the surface. Suitable compounds include tetrabutyl, tetraisopropyl and tetra-ethylhexyl titanate, titanium tetrachloride and ammonium salts of titanium lactate, tri-n-butyl vanadate alkyl zirconates, zirconium tetrahalides, stannic chloride which may contain a trace of antimonous trichloride, stannous chloride, stannous stearate, oleate or palmitate, and stannous naphthenates which may be applied by spraying in an alcoholic solvent. The second coating may be a polyethylene or polypropylene wax in an aqueous emulsion containing an alkali metal or ammonium stearate, palmitate, laurate or oleate, or morpholinium stearate; the acetate of a C15 or C17 amine; or a mixture of a polyester containing hydroxyl groups and the compound <FORM:1068899/B1-B2/1> The surface coated may be that of a bottle, jar, tumbler or sheet of glass and the process is preferably applied during manufacture between the forming furnace and the annealing lehr. Alternatively, the glass may be provided with the oxide coating, then with a coating of a salt of a fatty acid, and finally with an olefin polymer. |
