The present invention relates to active carbon having micropores with a diameter of 0.5 to 0.8 nm as 70 to 90 vol% of the total pores and nitrogen-based functional groups embedded on a surface. In addition, the present invention relates to a preparation method of the active carbon, which comprises the steps of: forming a reactive mixture of organic compounds including carbon precursors, alkaline salts and nitrogen-based functional groups; and heat-treating the reactive mixture at the temperature of 800°C to 1000°C in the presence of nitrogen gas.
