A method of treating a human subject in need of melatonin therapy comprises administering to a human subject a composition comprising melatonin dispersed in a polymer matrix adapted to cover the melatonin in a melatonin solubility enhancing pH environment after ingestion and to maintain the melatonin solubility enhancing pH environment when said composition is present in said subject's intestines so that an effective amount of melatonin is released into the subject's intestines.

1. A method of treating a human subject in need of melatonin therapy, the method comprising:
administering to a human subject a composition comprising melatonin dispersed in a polymer matrix, the polymer matrix covering the melatonin in an acidic pH environment after ingestion and insulating said melatonin from variations in pH along the subject's gastrointestinal tract so that an effective amount of melatonin is released into said subject's intestines, wherein said composition releases approximately 50% of the melatonin into said subject's gastrointestinal tract within approximately two hours after ingestion and releases substantially all of the remaining melatonin into said subject's gastrointestinal tract within approximately eight hours after ingestion, and said acidic pH environment has a pH of 2-4.
