The hydrolyzable chlorine content of an organic isocyanate is reduced by heating the latter with copper, silver, nickel, iron or zinc, or an oxide of said metal, at a temperature above 100 DEG C. but below that at which substantial decomposition of the isocyanate takes place. Specified isocyanates are octyl isocyanate, dodecyl isocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, 3,31 - diisocyanatedipropyl ether, cyclohexane - 1,4 - diisocyanate, 4,41 - methylenebis - (phenyl - isocyanate), 4,41-methylene-bis - (cyclohexyl - isocyanate), 1,4 - phenylenediisocyanate, tolylene - diisocyanates, xylylene - 1,4 - diisocyanates, naphthalene - 1,4 - diisocyanate, para, para1, para11 - triphenylmethane triisocyanate and mixtures thereof. |
