Redox polymers are prepared by reacting, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts reagent, a cross-linked polymer containing halomethylated aromatic nuclei with a quinone or hydroquinone, each having at least one hydrogen on a ring carbon atom available for substitution, or a diether or diester of such a hydroquinone, the resulting product, when derived from the diether or diester, being treated to convert the ether or ester groups to hydroxy groups. The polymer may be a chloromethylated copolymer, e.g. in bead form, of styrene, a -methylstyrene, vinyl-toluene or vinylnaphthalene and of divinylbenzene, or of styrene and trivinyl-benzene, vinyl toluene and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or a -methyl styrene and diallyl maleate, and may have a macroreticular structure. The quinone may be p-benzo-, naphthaor anthraquinone, or p-dihydroxybenzene or its diester or dialkyl ether. The Friedel-Crafts reagent may be zinc, ferric or aluminium chloride. The redox polymer may contain units corresponding to vinylbenzyl-benzoquinone or -dihydroxybenzene. |
