<PICT:1016721/C4-C5/1> Combustible gases are made by the pressure gasification, e.g. at 20 to 35 atmos. gauge, of finely divided solid fuel in suspension with oxygen, with or without water vapour, the fuel being introduced into the high pressure system pneumatically by a gaseous medium, e.g. nitrogen or air, compressed above the operating pressure. The solid fuel is delivered from a bunker 3 through a non-return element 35 to a high pressure injector 7 and is fed by a pipe 9 to a dust separator 10 by the gaseous medium which is returned via filter 12 to a compressor 8. The fuel, now under operating pressure, is mixed with oxygen from a compressor 18 and, if desired, water vapour from a boiler 21, prior to entering the gasification chamber 17. Dust separated at 12 is returned to the bunker 3, and loss of carrier gas (e.g. at 10, 12) is made up by the system 28 ... 33. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pressurized container which is periodically charged replaces the injector 7, a valved pipe which by-passes the container permitting continuous cyclic flow of the gaseous medium during charging of the container. Alternatively, the container can be made to operate continuously by inserting a sluice tank in the fuel line after the bunker 3 and before the container (see Fig. 3, not shown) or two containers may be provided and used alternately. |
