Disclosed is an autofocus system and method. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the autofocus method comprises: a step of dividing an image into a plurality of blocks; a step of discrete cosine transforming (DCT) each block of image data; a step of creating DCT mask which selects a frequency component of a DCT block which is the discrete cosine transformed block; and a step of calculating a focus value by applying the created DCT mask to each of the DCT block.
