An automatic transmission having a friction element which is positioned in a power-transmission path and engages and locks a locking mechanism when ON-pressure is supplied to an engagement-side oil chamber, maintains the engagement even when the oil pressure in the engagement-side oil chamber is reduced when the locking mechanism is locked, and unlocks the locking mechanism and releases when OFF-pressure is supplied to the release-side oil chamber when the locking mechanism is locked, the automatic transmission being further equipped with an OFF-pressure control unit for supplying OFF-pressure to the release-side oil chamber when ON-pressure is supplied to the engagement-side oil chamber and the friction element is engaged. |
