Nitrogenous fibrous materials are printed or dyed with an aqueous dye preparation containing a water-soluble or water-dispersible dyestuff and having an acid content of 4-30% referred to the weight of the preparation as a whole, the material being treated and then stored for at least 10 minutes at room temperature and then finished off by being washed, wherein the dye preparation used consists of an aqueous two phase system produced by a surface active coacervating agent. The aqueous 2-phase system may be produced by reaction products of fatty acids of 10-22 carbon atoms with hydroxyalkylamines in particular coconut oil fatty acids and 2 moles of diethanolamine, or a compound of formula R-(CH 2 CH 2 O)- n X in which R is a hydrophobic residue preferably of 10-22 carbon atoms, X is hydrogen or an acid water-solubilising group and n is a whole member not greater than 8. |
