The present invention relates to an HDMI dongle and a method for controlling the HDMI dongle. The HDMI dongle includes: a first port unit connected to an HDMI port arranged in a play device; a second port which receives power from the play device; a signal conversion module which is connected to the first port unit and converts a voice signal and an image signal which are received from the play device from an HDMI standard into an MIPI standard; a communications module which performs communications with an output device; and a control unit which controls to encode the voice signal and the image signal which have been converted by the signal conversion module, make the encoded voice signal and the encoded image signal into packets, and transmit the packets to the output device through the communications module. An image and a voice which are played by the play device can be transmitted to the output device such as a large display device to be output by using the transmission-type HDMI dongle connected to the play device.
