In the treatment of ashes in a garbage incinerator plant, the fine grain ashes are first screened out on a screen having circular or rectangular perforations and then the laminar fragments of glass and ceramics are screened out on a grate-bar, the remaining garbage then being passed over a screen having coarse circular or rectangular perforations for screening out the coarse grain ashes from the bulky fragments such as the necks of bottles. A grate-bar for screening out the laminar fragments is of stepped construction and mounted on springs 11, 12 for vibration by an unbalanced flywheel. Each step is provided with parallel bars which are preferably of circular cross-section and extend at right-angles to the grate-bars of an adjacent step.
