In a system for apportioning the load between a group of generating stations to produce power at the least cost comprises a first signal representative of the total required power generation of the group, a second signal derived from the first to represent approximately the incremental cost at that level, and a means responsive to the generating deficiency or surplus to modify the approximate cost to bring it nearer to the optimum value of cost. The system is stated to be simpler than one designed to produce an accurate value of incremental cost. Signals proportional to total generation 12 in an area and generation deficiency or surplus 14 are applied to a summing device 16, and by way of a recorder 17 to a function generator 18 which transforms the resultant signal by a predetermined law 19 to another signal representative of approximate incremental cost #. This signal is modified at 22 by another signal related to generation deficiency 14 through the control 25. The resultant of these signals increases or decreases the generation of power through lines 23, 24. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the signal from 25 may vary the position of the ordinate on the curve 19 as represented by slider 28, moved by a motor M according to generation deficiency, on a linear or non linear potentiometer 18A responsive to the difference between signals for total generation 12 and generation deficiency 14. The modified value of # at slide 28 may be further modified through potentiometers 61-66 to take account of line losses, which further modified signals are sent to the respective generating stations 54-57 &c. to vary the station outputs.
