An inorganic fiber produced by melting, containing four components consisting of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and CaO as the principal components thereof, and having the following composition: SiO2 in the amount of no less than 3.0 wt% and less than 48.0 wt%; Al2O3 in the amount of more than 20.0 wt% and no more than 80.0 wt%; MgO in the amount of 1.0-50.0 wt%, inclusive; CaO in the amount of 1.0-50.0 wt%, inclusive; and Fe2O3 in the amount of at least 0.0 wt% and less than 1.0 wt%.
