In a method for operating a nitrogen oxide sensor in an exhaust gas train of a vehicle, the nitrogen oxide sensor is operated in a first control mode, in which a measurement signal of the nitrogen oxide sensor is representative of a gas concentration of a first gas. The nitrogen oxide sensor is operated in a second control mode, which differs from the first control mode and in which a measurement signal of the nitrogen oxide sensor is representative of a gas concentration of a second gas, which differs from the first gas at least in one chemical element.
