A pressurized water reactor comprises a core 32, pressurizer 33, heat exchangers 34, 35 and thermal shield 37. The thermal shield is hollow and functions as a boiler to boil water drawn from the pressurizer through conduits 38, the vapour being returned through conduits 39 and condensed by water flowing from the core in a conduit 41. The boiling action serves to purify the water. The heating action in the shield 37 may be derived from electric resistances 45, tubes through which passes a heating fluid, baffles heated by radiation emitted by the core or fuel elements disposed in the shield and exposed to the neutron flux.
