Web winding apparatus wherein the web roll density is controlled comprises a positively driven winding drum 14, a positively driven core supporting mandrel 17 driven at a linear web speed approximately 10% greater than the drum speed, a support assembly 23 which supports the mandrel and is adapted to move frictionlessly in a horizontal plane on rails 25 as the diameter of the web roll increases, and hydraulic or pneumatic means 32 for applying a predetermined pressure on the support assembly. The core 15 on the mandrel 17 is allowed to slip to compensate for any gauge variations in the web 11 being wound. If the web 11 is slit at 13 into two or more webs, a second support assembly is provided on the opposite side of the drum 14. A plurality of cores may be mounted on a single mandrel. Each support assembly includes a support member 21 which carries two mandresl 17 and 19 and is pivoted so that either mandrel, when carrying a core, can be moved into operating relationship with the winding drum 14. When the web roll has reached a desired diameter, an eleetrical mechanism is actuated which starts the motor (not illustrated) which rotates the support member 21. A knife 33A cuts the web; a brush 33B wipes the leading edge of remaining web on to a new core having adhesive on its outer surface; and roller 33C holds the web on the new core as the core is rotated by the mandrel. Lay-on rolls 35 contact the surface of a wound roll during transfer to prevent telescoping of the outer layer of the web roll.</p>
