Disclosed in an embodiment of the present invention are a method and related device for estimating the traffic rate between virtual machine pairs. When estimating the rate of transmitting traffic from a virtual machine vm-xl to a virtual machine vm-yl, a solution in an embodiment of the present invention at least refers to the rate of transmitting traffic by N21 virtual machines comprising the virtual machine vm-xl deployed in N2 physical machines, the rate of transmitting traffic from N1 switching devices to N4 switching devices, the rate of receiving traffic by N31 virtual machines comprising the virtual machine vm-yl deployed in N3 physical machines, and the rate of sending out traffic by N4 switching devices, thus facilitating accurate estimation of the traffic rate between virtual machine pairs.
