A sensing device and method to measure force, load, strain, deformations when placed in a hole of another structure. The sensing device 110 is elongate, such as a beam or rod, with sensing elements 180a-d, 180a-d, and at least one portion 130a-c that engages the inner wall of the hole. (Also claimed is the elongate part only, without sensor elements). A second member 20, for example, a shaft, locking pin, load pin, has a cavity 120 into which the sensing device can be positioned. The second member with sensing device can be used as part of a connector, to attach first 10 and second 15 parts of a load bearing structure. The sensing element may be a vibrating wire or resonant sensor. The engaging portions may have a ball and taper, or ball and cage fixing mechanism, for one way movement of the sensing device; may have spring loaded or biased mechanisms to lock or permit movement. The position of engaging portions and sensing elements may define zones 175a-b, giving a measure of the total load for that zone. The device may be used to measure forces on subsea structures, for example in attachment of mooring lines. |
