<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain the performance in a wide operation region when fuel is directly injected into a cylinder, without including in the cylinder a direct-injection injector that directly injects fuel into the cylinder. <P>SOLUTION: When the flow velocity of intake air is varied, air supply from a lower nozzle 25 and a nozzle 26 is controlled to suppress adhesion of fuel onto an inner wall of an intake port 5, and additionally high-speed air is supplied from the nozzle 26 to cause a vertical tumble flow (turbulent flow) to occur in a combustion chamber 6.
