[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A sheet 4 is forced on to a core 2 by bending rollers 9, 10, 11 carried by bearings adjustably mounted with respect to the core. When the sheet has been coiled over the whole length of the core the hand wheel 43 is operated to raise the roller 9 and the stirrups 44, 46 attached to the bearings of this roller. The stirrups lift the core off the rollers 10, 11 and the coiled sheet which is now gripped between the pulley 48, forming part of the stirrup 46, and an adjustable pulley 49, is withdrawn from the core by rotating the handle 50 on the pulley 48. During coiling one end of, the sheet 4 is secured to the core by a clamp 5. The sheet slides in contact with a table 20 and engages a disc 23 on a carriage 24 adapted for movement by rack-and-pinion gearing by operation of a handle 27. Rollers 29 on the carriage engage an abutment plate 28. The machine is mounted on wheels 30 engaging rails 31 and may be moved during coiling by the motor rotating the core. The motor driving the core may move the carriage 24 instead of traversing the machine or the carriage may be moved by a winch thereon around which is coiled a cable attached to the machine frame. Each bending roller may comprise a number of discs juxtaposed on a shaft. They may extend over the width of the sheet only and move axially of the core with the sheet. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the manufacture of tapered tubes using a tapered core and tapered bending rollers. Heating of the sheet before coiling and welding of the seam are also referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
