A method of assessing a subject having Chagas disease comprising: measuring levels of (i) one or more proteins selected from vimentin, gamma actin, or keratin 10, or (ii) level of cysteinyl-S-nitrosylation (SNO) of one or more of beta actin, annexin A6, ferritin light chain fragment (˜18 kDa), parathyroid hormone 2 receptor fragment (˜20 kDa), or myosin-IXa fragment; wherein elevated levels of the proteins or nitrosylation is indicative of risk for developing chagasic cardiomyopathy.
