Brominated salicylanilides in amounts providing at least 0.5 wt. per cent bromine together with an oxide or sulphide of antimony, bismuth or arsenic are used as fire-retardants in organic polymer compositions. Specified compounds are di-, tri-, penta- and hexa-bromo-, 21-41-dibromo-5-chloro- and 41-bromo-5-chloro -salicylanilides. In examples they are incorporated in polyethylene; a hydroquinone-stabilized maleic-isophthalic-propylene glycol unsaturated polyester resin styrene composition containing benzoyl peroxide, antimony oxide, calcium carbonate and glass fibre; an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer containing antimony trioxide; and polyethylene containing antimony trioxide. Other polymers mentioned are phenol-, urea- and melamime-formaldehyde condensates, epoxy resins, linear polyesters and polyurethanes; alkyd resins, polystyrene (which may be foamed) and polyamides.
