A detergent composition comprises a tertiary amine oxide of the formula R1R2R3N-->O wherein R1 represents an alkyl, 2-hydroxyalkyl, 3-hydroxyalkyl or 3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl radical in which the alkyl and alkoxy radicals have from 10 to 18 carbon atons, and R2 and R3 represent methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-hydroxypropyl or 3-hydroxypropyl radicals, but in which at least one of R2 and R3 contain a hydroxyl group, in admixture with an anionic organic detergent, nonionic organic detergent, water soluble inorganic alkaline builder salt, water soluble organic sequestrant builder salt or mixture thereof. The above compositions may be formulated into bars, flakes, granules, tableted granules, scouring cleansers and liquids. Other ingredients which may be present include ampholytic or zwitterionic detergents, cationic detergents, perfumes, anti-tarnishing agents, anti-redeposition agents, bacteriostatic agents, dyes, fluorescers, oxygen or chlorine bleaches, suds builders and suds depressors. Specified anionic organic detergents are the Na, K, ammonium and alkylolammonium salts of C10- 20 fatty acids, alkylglyceryl ether sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, alkylmonoglyceride sulphates or sulphonates, alkyl polythenoxy ether sulphates, acyl sarcosinates, and alkyl phenol polyethenoxy sulphonates, e.g. potassium toluene sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, potassium N-methyl lauroyl tauride and sodium or triethanol-ammonium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. Specified nonionic organic detergents are polyethylene oxide condensates of alkyl phenols, ethylene oxide condensates of high molecular weight reaction products of propylene oxide and ethylene diamine, and ethylene oxide condensation products with C8- 18 aliphatic alcohols. Specified water soluble inorganic alkaline builder salts are sodium silicate, sodium tetraborate, sodium carbonate and sesquicarbonate, sodium and potassium bicarbonates, sodium and potassium tripolyphosphates and pyrophosphates, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium mono- and di-orthophosphate and trisodium phosphate. Specified water soluble organic sequestrants are Na, K, ammonium and triethanolammonium salts of ethylenediaminetetracetic, N - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - ethylenediaminetriacetic, nitrilotriacetic, N-(2-hydroxyethyl) - nitrilodiacetic, 2 - hydroxyethyliminodiacetic, diethylenetriaminepentacetic ; 1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetracetic and phytic acids. Other specified substances which may be present are sodium sulphate, tallow fatty acid, cornstarch, silica flour and carboxymethylhydroxyethyl cellulose.ALSO:The invention comprises tertiary amine oxides of the formula R1R2R3N --> O wherein R1 represents 2-hydroxyalkyl, 3-hydroxyalkyl or 3 - alkoxy - 2 - hydroxypropyl in which the alkyl and alkoxy radicals have from 10 to 18 carbon atoms, and R2 and R3 each represent 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-hydroxypropyl or 3-hydroxypropyl radicals. The above amine oxides are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding tertiary amines, e.g. with hydrogen peroxide. Bis - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - dodecylamine is prepared by reacting diethanolamine with dodecyl bromide. Bis - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 2 - hydroxydodecylamine is prepared by reacting 1,2-epoxydodecane with diethanolamine in the presence of aluminium chloride. N,N - Bis - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 3 - coconut - alkoxy - 2 - hydroxypropylamine is prepared by reacting diethanolamine with coconut-alkyl glycidyl ether.
