A rotary control member for an automatic lathe having movable tool-holders and an indexible turret mounted on slides connected to cam followers which co-operate with cams on the control member, in which the control member has a plurality of working zones angularly spaced about its axis of rotation, the number of zones being at least equal to the number of different operating positions of the turret and related to the number of phases in an operating cycle, in which each zone has associated with it a number of flat cams equal to the number of slides to be operated during the respective phase and in which each flat cam lies in a plane which is either parallel to or perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the control member.
