<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge detector, a printer, an edge detection method, a recording apparatus, and a recording method that can perform edge detection at increased speed with increased accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: When an edge sensor 40 detects a platen 53, a terminal A is kept at a high level. When the edge sensor 40 crosses an edge of a paper sheet 5, a step response occurs at the terminal A, and a capacitor C1 extracts a differential component of the step response. The differential component is amplified by an operational amplifier 45a. A comparator 45b and a comparator 45c generate detection outputs when the output of the operational amplifier 45a is larger than a reference voltage Vref2 or smaller than a reference voltage Vref3.
